Every year from mid November until late February or early March, the Plaza between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue transforms into The UPMC Rink at PPG Place. It is a spectacular, one-of-a-kind, outdoor ice skating rink in the center of the PPG Plaza, which is the Crown Jewel of the Pittsburgh skyline, and adjacent to Market Square. This season we open on November 15th and stay open until March 2nd.
The ice rink first opened in December of 2001. Highwoods Properties purchased PPG Place in September, 2011. The rink was replaced with a new larger ice rink for the 2015-16 season.
- The new $1 Million ice rink is 116′ x 116′ – 25% larger than original rink.
- The rink is 67% larger than the Rockefeller Center ice rink.
- We have over 700 pairs of skates available to rent ranging in sizes from 9 toddler to 15 adult.
- The ice rink is two-thirds the size of a standard National Hockey League rink.
- The rink is resurfaced by a Model 520 Zamboni.
At the center of our rink is our famous holiday Christmas Tree. The tree is 60’ tall with a 28’ base. The Christmas Tree was replaced in 2021 with a new tree the utilizes energy efficient LED lights and the ability to perform various light shows to entertain residents, skaters and customers along with visitors to downtown and Pittsburgh during the holiday season.
The annual tree lighting ceremony is run in conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s Tribute of Lights Ceremony. A child, who is a cancer survivor, annually lights the tree.
PPG PLACE, including the Plaza and ice rink areas, is a SMOKE-FREE ZONE.
The rink is managed by Magic Ice USA
